Zinc and other Exotic Metals

Overview

Roof and Façade
Assuming you know why you want zinc, this section talks about building zinc facades and roofs. The strong aesthetic appeal of ZINC architecture lies especially in its incredible diversity: walls, facades, roofs, soffits, door coverings can all be designed in zinc by an expert designer. The material comes in rolls and sheets and can be formed into many different types of systems including:

  • Flat lock panels
  • Angled Standing Seam
  • Roll Cap System
  • Tile Systems
  • Vertical Reveal Panels
  • Horizontal Reveal Panels
  • Shiplap Panel
  • Modular Rainscreen Panels
  • Sinusoidal Profile Corrugated Panels
  • Trapizoidal Profile Corrugated Panels

Roofs can be designed into:

  • Double Lock Standing Seam
  • Angled Standing Seam
  • Roll Cap System
  • Tile Systems

The system supporting zinc depends on the structure, the desired panel design, and the aesthetic requested. Typically, zinc is universally supported by a plywood or metal backer layer, so that the installer can fasten anywhere. This is protected by a breathable membrane. The rest of the structure is job dependent.

Zinc forms a rainscreen, so as a roof or façade is expected to let some water in, and protect the membranes that form the actual building envelope.

Zinc is allowed to expand and contract, and therefore the designer requires assistance during the shop drawing process to ensure the details allow for the right amount of expansion and contraction. Specifications should be written to force the General to hire from a set of biddersand to ensure the Contractor installs the product to allow for expansion and contraction.

The designer makes decisions about the thickness of material, the joinery, the size of the panels, the connections to the wall in order to make the building the Architect wants. The key thing about zinc is working with the right people. Engineered Assemblies, and our employees have designed, supplied and installed zinc in many different types of buildings. We are eager to show you.
